Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 or SP1 is a large update that fixes bugs, adds optimization and features, and closes vulnerabilities across the entire Office suite.
Service Packs are like milestones, whereas Microsoft uses them to mark a milestone in an application’s active life and to gather all of the updates thus far for that program into a single package. This package for Microsoft Office 2010 is a suite that includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more. Like the Windows OS, Office has an automatic update feature. For most users, SP1 will be downloaded and installed automatically. It’s also available in this stand-alone package for custom installations. Note that both the 32- and 64-bit version are included.
The first big milestone for Office 2010 is integration with Office 365, which is a web-based and subscription-based alternative to traditional MS Office. The patch also provides a number of connectivity refinements for those who sync with OneDrive or use another cloud solution. This update also provides Word a number of improvements when working with open formats, and PowerPoint gets features that make it better suited to multiple screens. There’s also a slew of security enhancements that protect your content and protect you from malicious macros and the like.
MS Office 2010 SP1 weighs in at less than 400 MB, but don’t let that small size fool you. This is a significant upgrade, and Microsoft uses compression to keep the download small and fast. This process can take a while, and that delay can be exacerbated by a slow computer. The installation is smart, however. That means that if you don’t have Access installed, for instance, it won’t waste your time installing those bits. SP1 is critical, so set some time aside where it can do its thing while you’re not using the computer it’s running on.
